Chemical spills into Palmerston North drains double in 2018

Spills of hazardous chemicals into Palmerston North's wastewater system are causing thousands of dollars of damage.

Last year was a particularly bad year, with 13 spills into the network and directly into waterways investigated by city council staff, up from seven in 2017.

The council's chief infrastructure officer Tom Williams is pleading with people to report spills promptly, to limit damage.

The first spill of 2019 happened in late January and was not picked up until an oil slick arrived at the Totara Rd wastewater treatment plant.
