In response to the growing concerns about the health impacts of lead and cadmium exposure, Minnesota enacted stringent regulations in 2023 to control the presence of these toxic metals in various consumer products. Effective from July 1, 2023, the law sets strict limits on lead and cadmium content in items such as toys, jewelry, school supplies, and more, capping lead at 90 parts per million and cadmium at 75 parts per million. he Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA), in collaboration with the Department of Health and Department of Commerce, has developed new guidance to aid manufacturers, retailers, and importers in understanding which products are regulated under this law. This guidance is crucial for ensuring that all applicable products are compliant with the new safety standards, emphasizing the importance of reducing exposure to these harmful metals in everyday items. The guidance also outlines the agency's approach to products and components that are not typically accessible, ensuring a comprehensive strategy to limit heavy metal toxicity from consumer goods.
