Updated catalogue of nanomaterials used in cosmetics

The European Commission has published an updated catalogue of nanomaterials used in cosmetic products on the EU market. It lists nanomaterials used as UV-filters, colourants and preservatives and indicates the cosmetic product categories where they are used together with foreseeable exposure conditions.

Helsinki, 2 December 2019 – Many of the nanomaterials listed in the catalogue are also registered under the REACH Regulation and the EUON maintains a table linking them to their registration data in ECHA’s chemicals database. There you can find more information about their safe use and what regulatory activities are relevant to them. The EUON table has been updated with the latest changes by the Commission. You can also find an archive of previous lists on the same page. The EUON’s search tool for nanomaterials has been updated to reflect the changes in the updated catalogue. Additional information on the hazard of the nanoforms of these substances may also become available after 1 January 2020, when the new REACH information requirements for nanomaterials enter into application.

As part of this update, the European Commission has requested some of the companies notifying their ingredients to check, and if necessary, correct some of their submitted data to ensure more consistent and accurate information. This update has also resulted in several previously notified materials being removed from the catalogue.

The updated catalogue includes 27 nanomaterials, 3 as colorants, 4 as UV-filters and 22 with other functions.
