The European Union has notified the WTO of a new regulation authorizing the use of lignosulphonate as a feed additive for all animal species. The regulation, detailed in Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/749, follows a positive assessment by the European Food Safety Authority. The substance is categorized under 'technological additives' and the functional group 'binders,' and it is reauthorized under certain conditions. The regulation includes a transitional period for compliance with the new requirements.

The objective of this measure is to ensure food safety and animal health. It aligns with the Codex Alimentarius Commission's Code of Practice on Good Animal Feeding (CAC/RCP 54-2004). The regulation was adopted on 29 February 2024 and published on 1 March 2024. It will enter into force twenty days following its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union.
