EU Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability: Chemistry without Hazardous Substances, but with Sustainable Chemicals? | Written by Christof Walter, Technical and Regulatory Affairs Officer at VdL

In May 2020 the EU Commission published the roadmap for the Chemicals strategy for sustainability. Several interesting and valid points are addressed in this roadmap. However, as a chemist two sentences immediately attracted my attention and left me wondering whether many chemists were involved in the drafting of the roadmap.

The first sentence was "In 2018, chemicals with properties hazardous for human health still represented 74% of the total chemical production in Europe, a percentage overall unchanged since 2004". And the second was the demand for "safer and more sustainable chemicals".
