US Customs and Border Protection Increases Tariffs to 25% on $200 Billion of Chinese Imports

The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced the implementation of 25% tariffs (up from 10%) on $200 billion worth of Chinese imports starting from 12:01 am on May 10^th. The tariff hike involved more than 5,700 categories of goods, including chemicals, textiles, food, electronic products, etc.

As CBP explained, the increased tariffs apply only to goods exported from China on or after the deadline and will take effect once shipments reach the US territory. This is different from the past when the date of import was considered the determining factor and leaves some room for further negotiations between China and the US. It is hoped that the two sides can reach an agreement before the tariff hike comes into effect.

Chinese exporters can go to http://www.usitc.gov/tata/hts/bychapter/index.htm to check whether their goods are included in the US tariff actions, and adjust their production and export plans accordingly.
