The Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes) conducted a market surveillance project last year to detect restricted substances in car tires and aluminum rims. The project tested 40 tires and 10 rims, finding only one non-compliant tire with excessive levels of PAHs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons), leading to a sales ban and its removal from online sales. Tests were conducted on both summer and winter tires from various sources, including outside the EU, particularly budget tires from Asia. The tires were checked for PAHs and heavy metals like lead, cadmium, mercury, and chromium(VI), while rims were tested for heavy metals in aluminum alloys. All other products met the regulatory requirements, with no heavy metal concentrations exceeding the limits. This project highlights the effectiveness of Tukes' risk-based regulatory approach without pre-market product approvals.CONTINUE READING ON tukes.fi
